Edit #3 - Turning this thread into a "currently watching" thread

Please ignore this post and skip to post #13 (Edit #2 - More suggestions).

Original topic title: Anime suggestion; looking for mentally stimulating/mystery anime

So far, my little list of anime watched includes:
Full Metal Alchemist
Naruto
Bleach
Death Note

Bleh. Small list. I am trying to watch some more anime. I am currently looking at anime like Death Note, which has a battle of wits between the main characters. Any suggestions? I know nothing about choosing anime.

Edit (This post has been edited by Spacewhizguy: Mar 15 2007, 04:10 PM): Forgot to mention mental part in title :/. Removed "serious" part since it was too vague.

Edit #2: Ggggggrave dig.

try Code Geass (think Gundam w/brains and CLAMP char. designs . . . not as bad as it sounds . . . try it) its the closest series to death note
and Spiral (mystery anime)

Serial Experiments Lain... a rather old anime, but the story was nice, although rather confusing.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, maybe? It has some comedic elements, but really serious and rather sadistic when the serious parts come.

Well, if you're looking for not so much serious as mentally stimulating stuff, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is definitely the way to go. Beware though as some parts might seem totally random and out of place... But if you bear through it, you'll find that its absolute gold.

The Ghost in the Shell movies (the first one and Innocence) and series (Stand Alone Complex) are products of sheer philosophical genius as well, with a healthy dose of sci-fi action thrown in just for good measure.

Well, there really are a ton of serious anime out there, you just gotta look for it.

Anyways as for mystery, i second Higurashi, its mystery, but in the end the problems don't really get resolved, or do they? Pretty good mystery.

Detective Conan's also ok, if you like 10 yr old midget detectives...

Go with Higurashi

Just a piece of advice...

If you are going to watch Conan, you might as well think to yourself if you like animes that go over 450~ episodes... lol

Forgot to add that you might as well try Rurouni Kenshin (aka Himura Kenshin, D-Gray man and Trigun =)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to add one more

Samurai Champloo (I think that's how you spell it... O.o) <- One of the most bloody samurai animes i've seen, plus his uber l33t hip hop moves are godlike

Grrrrrave dig!

Well, after 3 years, my anime list hasn't expanded much. D.gray-man (finished, kinda boring now that I think about it and I didn't even remember it until now), Dragon Ball Kai (watching for the storyline since I never watched DBZ), and Angel Beats (love it).

And I finally took some of this old advice and watched the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (original run in broadcast order). Didn't expect to like it because of the comedy focus. Don't really see the "mentally stimulating" aspect like someone suggested. Hated the first episode. The rest were fine, with some good moments.

Granted, the series is growing on me. Maybe it's because I'm a sucker for a storyline and don't like it when an anime ends, so I want moar. And maybe watching the entire thing in a single Saturday when I was tired didn't help. Good experience though, and now I can say that I've watched it. Where'd Neko/Allure disappear to anyway? Still got that crazy addiction to Haruhi?

Anyway, any anime suggestions? From some suggestions at playdota and wikipedia research, I might check out Umineko, Code Geass (also recommended here!), and Clannad.

I think I like drama with a not-slow pacing that tells a story or character development (I hate Naruto and Bleach's slow pacing with the 10 hour character expressions). I like a good story being told. Action/fighting helps the pacing I suppose, though Death Note didn't have a lot of that and used more reasoning stuff to fill in the story (and from first post, I like Death Note). Comedy's good too, but I hate an overload/try too hard (like those Hollow guys following Ichigo in Hueco Mundo, if it was only a bit per episode it would be fine, but it's entire minutes :/). A mystery's a bonus I guess, since I used to like mystery novels when I still read and liked the first half of Death Note.

And maybe you guys can figure out the kind of character development I like. Stuff like Ichigo + Inoue, Naruto + Sakura, and Sasuke + anyone, and minor characters' stories are bleh. Stuff like Haruhi episode 6 (original broadcast end), 4th episode of the Sighs arc (that scene with Kyon and Haruhi), and end of 5th episode and 6th episode of Angel Beats (Otonashi + Tenshi) are awesome.  They can single-handedly make me like a series.

Thanks!

And I forgot my last criteria. High quality :S. I don't watch a lot of anime, so I usually only watch really good stuff. Out of those suggestions (and other suggestions), are there any really good series that are a must watch? Like one or two specific ones.

Thankee!
